Jeer-Mirya Kadhi
Cumin-Black Pepper Curry
Ingredients
1/2 cup fresh coconut
4-5 byadgi chilies
9 black peppercorns
1 tsp cumin seeds
salt
1 tsp tamarind pulp
1 cup water
Tempering 1
1 tsp coconut oil
2 cloves of garlic, slivered
or
Tempering 2
1 tsp coconut oil
Method
1. Roast black peppercorns and cumin seeds till you get a nice aroma.
2. Roast byadgi chilies adding a few drops of oil - preferably coconut oil.
3. Grind coconut, roasted spices, byadgi chilies, tamarind pulp, salt.
4. Add water and bring to a gentle boil. Do not over boil.
5. Take off the gas.
6. In another small saucepan, heat coconut oil or ghee. Add garlic slivers.
7. As the garlic cloves change the color, pour the sizzling oil over the kadhi. Cover with the lid immediately. If using tempering 2, as the kadhi boils, just drizzle the coconut oil. Do not use garlic seasoning.
8. Serve with plain rice and fried fish.
Note -
1. While roasting the spices, roast them on a low flame. Do not let them burn.

meera, this is one the best examples as how simple food can taste heavenly. i add few curry leaves in the end.
Love this Kadhi, love the color too. I have to make your mom's soul Kadhi next week. But I am giving myself a break this week from "cooking from other blogs".
I am running around like crazy woman ordering cakes etc since last week, tomorrow, got to clean the whole house and the dog and clean the house again after Saturday's teenage rampage! :P
Just pour this curry into the middle of my rice, just the hought makes me drool.
Meera kadhi looks very delicious & easy to make.
Aah, tough choice between Sola kadhi and jeer-mirya kadhi. I love both a lot. On a cold wintry day, jeer-mirya kadhi and in summers sola kadhi with some fried fish, how abt that?...Nice choice for the event Meera!
wow, kadhi looks great Meera! Simple but mouth-watering.
Simple and mouth watering..Love Kadhis..
I remember this lovely, simple but flavorful curry so well. Haven't had it for a long, long time. Thanks for the recipe, Meera, and for evoking some nice memories.
One of my favorite kadhis..I always make this when I am down with cold or sore throat..tastes great with rice..yumm!!
P.S-why dont you send it to Divya who is hosting this month's think spice-think pepper..!!
I am drooling - this looks amazingly tasty! Thanks

HC:
I know what you mean. Plain rice and this kadhi with fried fish - that's heaven for me!!:-D
Trupti:
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Maya:
That's right. I agree that both these kadhis can be liked equally, but when my mom says she likes this kadhi more than sol kadhi, I am like - "is that your final answer? I mean think more"...and my mom goes, "no...lock kiya jaaye! This is my final answer -I like jeer mirya kadhi more than soul kadhi..." :-D
Uma:
Thanks dear!
Vaishali:
Make it sometimes. You may like it with plain rice and some potato kaap or kachrya.
Divya K:
Thanks. You too, jeer mirya kadhi fan?? :-D
Yes. I made it just for Divya's peppercorn event!
Miri:
Yes. It's very simple but really tastes good.
Purnima:
I hope you guys like it - fingers crossed...It's deliciously simple. If not fried fish, even veggies kaap will work too. The vessel is from India, as you might have guessed!!:-D
Piyyava tambli - ages since i had it. but i think i m going to make that onion tamboli some time soon.
